KayCyy: The Rising Star of Kenyan Hip-Hop

KayCyy is one of the most exciting newcomers in hip-hop, garnering widespread attention with his innovative style. Hailing from Nairobi, Kenya, this gifted rapper seamlessly fuses traditional Kenyan rhythms with contemporary hip-hop, creating a distinctive sound that’s captivating audiences worldwide. As his discography grows and his fanbase expands rapidly, KayCyy has solidified his position as a rising star in the hip-hop world.

Born in Keroka, Kenya on September 23, 1997.At the age of nine, he and his family moved to the United States and resided in Saint paul, Minnesota. KayCyy’s journey into music began at a young age. Growing up, he was exposed to a wide range of musical influences, from traditional Kenyan folk to American hip-hop. He began writing his own raps as a teenager.

KayCyy has collaborated with an impressive array of top artists, lending his skills as a songwriter and vocalist to projects with Kanye West, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, and Travis Scott, among others. Notably, KayCyy played a significant role in the creation of West’s album Donda, penning and recording reference tracks for multiple songs.

His music career began to take shape in 2016, when he was still in high school, after signing with Alive Productions, a record label founded by producer Reefa. He remained with the label until 2021. During this period, he released two mixtapes: Patient Enough in 2020 and Ups & Downs in 2021. KayCyy’s debut album, Who Is KayCyy?, was officially released in 2024, marking a significant milestone in his rising career.

Since 2019, KayCyy has maintained a close creative partnership with Kanye West, facilitated by record executive Abou “Bu” Thiam, who manages both artists. Mbogo is currently signed to Thiam’s BuVision label and Columbia Records. His collaborations with West include contributions as a performer and writer on the album Donda, notably on the hit single “Hurricane”, one of the album’s most successful tracks.

KayCyy earned a prestigious Grammy nominations for his contributions to Kanye West’s album Donda, including a win for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his background vocals on the hit single “Hurricane”. In addition to his Grammy success, KayCyy has released several notable projects, including a collaborative EP with Gesaffelstein, TW20 50 (March 2022), a mixtape titled Get Used To It (June 2022), and a second EP with Gesaffelstein, TW2052 (May 2023).
