The enduring legacy of late rapper Juice Wrld is evident in the ongoing success of his music, as the visually striking video for “Lucid Dreams,” directed by Cole Bennett, has now been viewed over 1 billion times, a milestone reached on August 7.
With ‘Lucid Dreams’ reaching 1 billion views, Juice Wrld enters a prestigious league of rappers with similarly successful music videos, such as Wiz Khalifa’s ‘See You Again’, Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’, and Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’.
Initially shared on SoundCloud in 2017, Juice Wrld’s ‘Lucid Dreams’ gained momentum before its official single release in May 2018, produced by Nick Mira. The song first appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 74, eventually rising to No. 2 and achieving diamond status in 2022. The accompanying music video, released a week after the single, features surreal imagery, including a memorable scene of Juice Wrld’s head emerging from a hole.
In 2019, just two months prior to Juice Wrld’s tragic death from an accidental overdose, rock band Yellowcard filed a $15 million lawsuit against him, alleging that he had plagiarized their 2006 song “Holly Wood Died.” Although the group initially intended to proceed with the lawsuit after Juice Wrld’s passing, they later chose to dismiss it. Meanwhile, “Lucid Dreams,” which also samples Sting’s “Shape of My Heart,” remains a fan favorite and one of Juice Wrld’s most cherished ballads.
